FMS

The human body, even when it belongs to an elite athlete, is not without its flaws and idiosyncrasies. Subtle weaknesses or areas of asymmetry in the body, often unnoticed, not only prevent an athlete from achieving optimum benefit from training or maximum efficiency in competition, but can lead to injury.

Today, Functional Movement Sceening is a physicla testing system being adopted by some of the most recognized sports and performance related organizations in the world.

The LifeMark Richmond Olympic Oval clinic is pleased to be officially certified to conduct Functional Movement Screens.

The intended purpose of movement screening:

• To identify athletes at risk for injury

• Use corrective exercise to normalize or improve fundamental movement patterns

• Improve performance

• Provide an objective measure to monitor progress

About the FMS™ ™:

The FMS™ ™ is a movement screen that looks at 7 fundamental movement patterns. The movement patterns have the potential to reveal dysfunctional movement patterns that can contribute to risk for injury. The movements are scored on a numerical scale. In a study that was done with NFL athletes, it was shown that athletes who scored less than a pre determined score on the FMS™ ™ were 11 times more likely to be injured. Athletes that showed an asymmetry were 3 times more likely to sustain an injury.

Evidence for the FMS™ ™:

The FMS™ ™ screening tool has been used on multiple professional teams, including teams from the NFL and NHL. Implementation of corrective exercises, following the identification of faulty movement patterns, resulted in an increase in the FMS™ ™ scores, a reduction of asymmetries and thus a decrease in risk of injury.
